ENERGIZE TACOMA EQUITY & INCLUSION STATEMENT
As a multidisciplinary organization focused on culture, art, and science, Energize Tacoma is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. We believe that creativity and community-building thrive when diversity is embraced and celebrated. It is our moral responsibility to actively challenge the inequities that have historically excluded marginalized communities from opportunities in these sectors.
We are committed to ensuring that all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, or socioeconomic status, can fully participate in, and benefit from, the programs and initiatives we create. We recognize that systemic barriers have disproportionately affected many communities, and that is why diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to our mission and vision for the future of Tacoma.
Our Vision for Equity and Inclusion:
-
Participation for All: We strive to ensure that individuals of all identities and backgrounds can engage in the cultural, artistic, and scientific programs we offer. Whether through art exhibitions, public events, or educational initiatives, we are committed to removing any barriers—financial, physical, or social—that limit participation.
-
Collaborative Accountability: We believe that equity is a shared responsibility. Energize Tacoma will work closely with community members, local government, and funders to foster transparency and accountability in our work. We are committed to listening to the diverse voices of Tacoma to better serve the community’s needs and aspirations.
-
Inclusive Public Spaces: As advocates for vibrant public spaces, we work to ensure that these spaces are not only physically accessible but also welcoming to people from all walks of life. Whether it’s through public art installations, pedestrian-friendly design, or community events, our goal is to create places where everyone feels they belong.
-
Uplifting Marginalized Voices: A core part of our mission is amplifying the voices of those historically excluded from cultural and civic participation. Through programs like the Sankofa Project, we highlight underrepresented narratives, particularly from Black, Indigenous, and other marginalized communities, ensuring their contributions are celebrated and recognized.
Acknowledgment of Indigenous Lands:
We acknowledge that Energize Tacoma operates on the traditional land of the Salish people, specifically the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. We honor the rich cultural legacy of these Indigenous peoples and recognize the ongoing presence and contributions of Native communities. While we may not always work directly with these tribes, we remain committed to respecting the land and people by centering Indigenous perspectives where appropriate in our work.
Our Commitment Moving Forward:
This equity and inclusion statement serves as a guiding framework for all of our projects, partnerships, and internal practices. Energize Tacoma will continue to examine our processes for equity gaps and engage with our community to ensure we are moving toward a more just and inclusive future. By prioritizing diversity, inclusion, and equity, we aim to build a Tacoma where all people feel empowered to participate in the cultural and civic life of our city.
