Priority for Underutilized Public Space
Energize Tacoma is committed to transforming underutilized public spaces into vibrant, multifaceted destinations that reflect and celebrate the rich diversity of Tacoma’s culture, art, and scientific innovation. Our work revolves around reimagining neglected areas into community hubs where creativity, learning, and connection thrive. Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, we use these spaces to create meaningful experiences and opportunities that invite the public to explore new ideas, engage in cultural dialogue, and build connections across neighborhoods.
Since our inception, we have taken deliberate steps to bring our vision to life. Our early activation of Tollefson Plaza in 2021—through partnerships with the Tacoma Art Museum and the City of Tacoma—transformed a dormant space into a lively epicenter of community engagement. From food trucks and local events to arts programs and interactive experiences, we set the stage for what has become our ongoing mission: using public spaces to elevate community life.
Today, Energize Tacoma continues to focus on creating environments that bridge the worlds of culture, art, and science. Through initiatives like the Sankofa Center—which brings attention to underrepresented histories and cultures—and ongoing projects like the Picture Pac Ave initiative, we are committed to fostering spaces that serve as platforms for community expression, artistic growth, and scientific exploration. By incorporating art installations, pop-up events, cultural programming, and science education, we ensure that these spaces are dynamic, inclusive, and reflective of Tacoma’s evolving identity.
Our goal is to reshape public spaces into destinations that contribute to Tacoma’s long-term vibrancy, economic growth, and sense of place. Each project we undertake is designed to bring out the best in Tacoma, offering residents and visitors alike the chance to connect, learn, and be inspired by the unique blend of creative and intellectual energy that defines our community.
